Chapter 30 1 I will extol thee, O LORD; for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me.2 O LORD my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me.3 O LORD, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave: thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.4 Sing unto the LORD, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.5 For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.6 And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved.7 LORD, by thy favour thou hast made my mountain to stand strong: thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled.8 I cried to thee, O LORD; and unto the LORD I made supplication.9 What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth?10 Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me: LORD, be thou my helper.11 Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness;12 To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.
Chapter 31 1 In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness.2 Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.3 For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me.4 Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength.5 Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.6 I have hated them that regard lying vanities: but I trust in the LORD.7 I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities;8 And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room.
The Book of Psalms in its current, most commonly used forms, consists of 150 songs and prayers referred to individually as psalms and referenced by chapter and verse. They each have a poetic character with frequent use of parallelism. In addition to the title of the collection which translates as "song" or "hymns" from both Hebrew and Greek, superscriptions (or headings) in many of the Psalms provide musical references and some direction, in some cases even references to melodies that would have been well-known by early congregations.
